Sword & Shield – Nintendo Announces 2 New Pokémon Games on Switch for 2019

Let’s be honest from the start, if your decision to buy a Nintendo Switch wasn’t heavily influenced by the promise of new Pokémon games then you’re probably kidding yourself. Well, if you’re still sat on the fence after the mixed (but largely favourable) reaction to the Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee! games last year, then you might want to consider parting with your pennies before the end of the year as Nintendo has announced 2 brand new Pokémon games will drop before 2019 is over.

The new 8th generation games, which will be called Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield respectively, were both announced today at a special event held in honour of Pokémon day and marks the continued success of the brand which has been going strong ever since first appearing in Japan way back in 1996.

Unlike the previous incarnations of the games, Pokémon Sword and Shield will be set in a fictionalised version of England known as Galar and will feature a host of brand new starter monsters including a fire rabbit named Scorbunny, a water lizard called Sobble, and a grass monkey named Grookey.

Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble will be the new starter Pokémon in Sword and Shield

Perhaps more exciting than the new generation of characters though was the gameplay teaser which shows players stumbling upon a wild Pikachu in the long-grass that you need to capture to kick off the game. Long-time fans of the series will remember that this is much more in keeping with the old school Pokémon games rather than the recent 2018 Switch offerings which deviated from the norm.

This is set to be a very exciting year for Pokémon fans on the whole as not only are we getting two new video games but we’re also getting the first ever live action and CGI movie Detective Pikachu which stars Ryan Reynolds as a snarky version of Pikachu and lands in cinemas this May. Hopefully, that will be enough to keep us happy until Sword and Shield are eventually released into the wild later this year.
