Must Play Games Collection: Sony PlayStation (Part 2)

As we previously mentioned in our Must Play Games Collection: Sony PlayStation retro rundown the PS1 was a major success. Many of today’s gaming icons and top developers cut their teeth debuting on the little grey box. Amassing a library of over 3,000 games we were crazy just to select ten for our must play series, so here’s another ten. We could keep running with these!

SKULLMONKEYS

ps05

Skullmonkeys is a genuinely funny platformer which played a lot like it was made by David Perry, it wasn’t though. The story saw evil Klogg, leader of the Skullmonkeys, trying to destroy the Neverhood leaving protagonist Klaymen to save the day.

ROAD & TRACK PRESENTS: THE NEED FOR SPEED

ps10

You may know this simply as Need for Speed, another franchise EA has subsequently destroyed. Released originally in 1994 on the 3DO it was later ported to the PlayStation which was a great move because no one actually had a 3DO. At the time it represented a huge step forward with its fully 3D rendered world, unique driving mechanics and a fantastic two-player link mode. It was the future of gaming, 22 years ago.

MOTOR TOON GRAND PRIX 2

ps12

Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 is a great kart-style racer, which no one played. Made by the relatively unknown, at the time, Polyphony Digital it possessed amazing graphics, crazy weapons while actually being a genuinely great driving game. It’s no surprise the developers went on to make the world’s most successful driving series.

TOBAL No.1

ps09

Battle Arena Toshinden was realistically quite poor, Tekken was just a nice looking 3D fighter restricted by a 2D plane but Squares Tobal No.1 was a true contender to topple Virtua Fighters crown. Tobal No.1 had a decent story mode and a truly in-depth fighting system, much like the aforementioned king. It also helped that it looked great and ran silky smooth.

SUPERSONIC RACERS

ps08

I was lucky enough to play the developers of this game at a trade show, in 1996. Supersonic Racers is a 3D take on the popular Micro Machines formula, unsurprisingly made by some of the original Codemasters team. It added weapons and supported the multi-tap. And yes, I beat them.

POINT BLANK

ps07

Well, its Point Blank isn’t it, Aim, shoot and move on. I don’t really need to say anymore.

ROAD RASH: JAILBREAK

ps06

Jailbreak was the last decent hurrah for the Road Rash series. For this release it added sidecars, more weapons while feeling a bit more about racing than fighting. Sure Road Redemption was enjoyable but why has it been so long since a proper Road Rash release?

MEDAL OF HONOR

ps11

Medal of Honor was the first game I ever played using a surround sound system, it was totally immersive and atmospheric both audibly and graphically. The story was written by some guy called Spielberg (who makes films) and the soundtrack was done by another bloke who did some of the Jurassic World films. EA of course completely ruined its reputation by saturating the market with countless poor sequels.

BROKEN SWORD: SHADOW OF THE TEMPLARS

ps18

Ok, so Discworld was the first point and click adventure PlayStation owners got to experience, however it had a niche audience. Broken Sword combined excellent writing, voice acting, a great soundtrack and a charming hand-animated style to become one of the most successful point and clicks ever. Despite being released on nearly every single format known to man, the PlayStation claims over half of its total sales, a testament to how important the format and game were to each other.

BUST-A-MOVE 2

ps17

Simple, intuitive and highly addictive. Quite simply one of the greatest puzzle games ever made, plus it has Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble in it.
