Metal Gear Ridiculous
The Metal Gear games have been immensely innovative. Any game that implements stealth gameplay has the Metal Gear series to thank for the inspiration. Metal Gear Solid alone made so many strides in unique gameplay, both stealth and otherwise. Many games have paid homage to this franchise. UnMetal not only pays homage to it, but pokes fun at it while doing so.
Jesse Fox is a special agent who was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit. As you play Jesse escaping from prison (which involves a clever reference to The Goonies), future (or present?) Jesse recounts all the events to a military interrogator. Gameplay will frequently be interrupted by the interrogator asking questions and Jesse coming up with different absurd explanations. Some of these lead to changes in the game. One example being the interrogator asking Fox if there were rats in the sewer he was sneaking through. Choosing “tons” prompts Jesse to talk about how he felt like a giant piece of cheese. This turns your character sprite into a pixelated hunk of cheese and you must run from the swarm of rats while a trademark friendly version of the Benny Hill theme plays.
Gain experience and skills by utilising stealth to take down your enemies
The actual gameplay of UnMetal is nothing new. It plays very much like the Metal Gear games on the MSX. You sneak around, you knock out guards, you solve some puzzles… if you’ve played a Metal Gear game, you know what to expect. Some sections of the game are a bit trial and error, so you’ll find yourself dying and playing them over again until you figure it out. While normally I would deduct points for this, the humour in discovering the right and wrong ways to proceed makes up for it.
Final Words
As this is definitely a game you need to experience for yourself, I don’t want to write too much and spoil it. I’ll leave it at this: if you enjoy the Metal Gear games and movies such as Hot Shots and Naked Gun, you owe it to yourself to check out UnMetal. While the gameplay doesn’t really do anything to add to the genre, the brilliant dialogue and top-notch voice acting are worth the entire 10-ish hour experience.
