Lord Shmup’s November 2020 eShop Sale Highlights

Good afternoon everyone! Our Twitter timelines have been filled with sales but I have yet to see my friends post their recommendations or purchases from these sales.

I’ve put together a list of games that are on sale I want to showcase, starting with our friends at Big Blue Bubble.

I gave Foregone 9/10 and loved my play-through of it! There is a new game plus mode as well for those that want more, with the same upgrades obtained from the first run. The game is on sale via the Nintendo NA eShop for $19.49 down from the original $29.99 price!

Foregone is a fast and fluid 2D action-platformer packed with legendary loot and stunning pixel art.

Years after a devastating war, the city of Calagan is once again besieged by an all-corrupting force known as the Harrow. As the city’s strongest super-soldier, it’s up to you to investigate the Harrow’s origins and prevent its reanimated minions from destroying your home. But the Harrow isn’t just reviving the dead – it’s dredging up memories better left forgotten.

Foregone is a fast and fluid 2D action-platformer packed with legendary loot and stunning pixel art. Collect an arsenal of powerful weapons and upgradeable skills, then use them to shoot and slash your way through hand-crafted pixel environments hiding a treasure trove of secrets.

Unravel a compelling story of regret and conspiracy as you slice your way through hordes of enemies and carry out your mission to save Calagan from total annihilation.

Super Hydorah

Next up, our friends at Abylight Studios! Welcome them back to Twitter and give them a follow while you enjoy their sales. Super Hydorah is a side-scrolling shmup and is half off! Originally $19.99 down to that sweet and low price of $9.99, head over to the eShop and if this has your interest.

Challenging and handcrafted: a declaration of love to shmups

An evil force has launched an invasion over the Omios star! Fly with the space fleet in a campaign to liberate planets, destroy enemy bases and discover the mysterious force behind the attack. Biomechanical enemies, space creatures, exotic planets and climatic threats are waiting for you, so select a route, equip your ship and prepare to die!

Super Hydorah is a side scroller non-linear SHMUP which gives the player a challenging experience with the best from the greatest classics of the genre: straightforward action, old school visuals and a wide array of content with unique space settings.

Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition

Another title from Abylight that is half off at $9.99 on the US eShop. We loved Hyper Light Drifter and gave it a perfect score in our review.

Drift up in a mysterious world to find a cure for a deadly illness… traverse a dark, detailed land with vicious enemies and secrets abound.

The wait is over, the worldwide acclaimed game Hyper Light Drifter is finally here with this impressive Special Edition! Runs at 60fps, includes new exclusive content and all the previously released remastered for a perfectly immersive gaming experience to play anywhere.

Explore a beautiful, vast and ruined world riddled with dangers and lost technologies. Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Hyper Light Drifter is an action-adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

Cursed Castilla

Next up is the NES looking, side-scrolling platformer called Cursed Castilla which is currently priced at $6.99 on the Nintendo eShop.

Revive the glory of the Arcade times!

The tears of a young witch have been turned into a key by a demon to open a gateway to hell. In Cursed Castilla, one takes the role of Don Ramiro, a knight appointed by King Alphonse VI, to fight and banish the evil invading the lands of Tolomera.

Don Ramiro will face Mouras, Ojáncanos, Nuberus and Malismos: creatures from the European folklore, as well as from chivalric romances such as Amadís de Gaula. For that, one will use a different range of weapons to defeat the enemies, in a pure classic arcade action style.

After spending 20 hours playing Downwell, I can certainly recommend it at the full price of $2.99, now it’s dropped to $2.00 you should absolutely purchase this game at once from the Nintendo eShop. You can also read our full review here.

Downwell is a curious game about a young person venturing down a well in search of untold treasures with only his Gunboots for protection. Make your way further and further down into the darkness filled with nasty creatures and mysterious secrets to collect the spectacular red gems scattered about the rocks. Step into precariously placed shops and buy some helpful items or level up between levels to battle well-dwelling monsters and uncover hidden caves filled with riches and relics. No two trips down the well are ever the same!

Exit The Gungeon

From the same publisher, I would have to recommend Exit The Gungeon. I reviewed this game and purchased it last time it went on sale. You should look at picking this up today from the Nintendo eShop page for $6.99.

Exit the Gungeon is a small, spin-off ‘dungeon climber’ immediately following the adventures of the misfit Gungeoneers.

Exit the Gungeon is a small, arcade-style, spin-off ‘dungeon climber’ that immediately follows the adventures of the misfit Gungeoneers attempting to survive a series of increasingly dangerous elevators and countless waves of enemies.

The Gungeon has become a paradox and is collapsing! Blessed by the magic of the Sorceress, your gun will change rapidly as you ascend the Gungeon. The better you play, and the higher your combo, the more powerful the form your gun will take.

Battle against the last and most bitter of the Gundead at a frantic pace, slowing down just long enough to chat with some familiar faces… and a few new ones. Shifting rooms, enemies, bosses, bizarre weapons and items all combine to ensure that no two attempts to Exit the Gungeon are the same.

VASARA Collection

Up next is a two-in-one bundle of old school vertical shmups, the VASARA collection. For $2 you could snag these with your gold coins to add another game to your shmup collection via the Nintendo eShop page.

Highly acclaimed Arcade Shoot’em Ups, Vasara and Vasara 2, available in a single package – Including an exclusive brand new game mode.

For the very first time, highly acclaimed Japanese Arcade Shoot’em Ups, Vasara and Vasara 2, are made available to the whole world via this package: VASARA Collection! Science Fiction meets History in these arcade classics which take place in an alternate timeline Feudal Japan where technologically advanced weaponry and equipment are a reality, and heroes use flying motorcycles with amazing firepower and fierce melee weapons to destroy their enemies.

Fight against warships, battle tanks, giant robots, evil soldiers and rogue Samurais to prevent 1600’s Japan from being taken over by tyrannical forces. The highly skill-based gameplay keeps you at the edge of your seat at all times. Try and stay alive on this frantic game where everyone, and everything, is out to kill you!

Golf Peaks

We reviewed Golf Peaks, a sort of golf/puzzle game that racked up an impressive 8/10! You can read our review here. It’s currently down to $1.99 on the eShop.

Ditch your hiking gear, don your golfing cap and climb mountain peaks just by playing golf!

No understanding of golf is required – just grab your controllers and conquer the mountain peaks by making your way to the hole, however not in the usual skill-shot based style. Instead, plan your strategy and use action cards to move the ball! Solve over 100 enjoyable yet challenging puzzles accompanied by relaxing music and minimalist, eye-pleasing graphics and conquer the summits!

The title uniquely combines entertaining logic-game mechanics with an easy-to-learn card-based movement system, providing the player with numerous action cards. The minimalistic visuals accompanied by a relaxing soundtrack makes Golf Peaks a mind-soothing experience!

This next game I can’t recommend but I HIGHLY recommend reading our review of this $1.99 game. And then avoiding the Nintendo eShop page.

Save your family after a horrible accident with both a boomerang wrench and a clock that controls time.

SkyTime is a 3D platformer in which you slow time, dodge bullets, destroy turrets, and overcome obstacles!

In SkyTime, you are a scientist who lost their family in an avalanche and are trying to get them back. You created a time machine, but it was missing one key component: a reactor core to power it. You stole one from the evil private military company Mortech, and are now being chased. Can you outrun them?

Blazing Beaks

I’ve recommended this game on many of its deep dive eShop sales: Blazing Beaks! $1.99. We loved this game so much you can read my review here or the words of Breadroll here.

Roguelite – where too much greediness can be fatal. A colourful world with armed birds blazing their way through piles of mutants, monsters and creepy creatures.

Use your one-of-a-kind bird skills to whack every nasty thing in your way, so it returns from whence it came. Explore tons of randomly generated levels bursting with secrets to find and mysteries to unravel. Hear the sweet voice of powerful artefacts calling your name but beware of their dark force. Think twice before picking them up, as they will pray on your greed leading eventually to your annihilation.

Aqua Kitty UDX

I recently purchased a game using an eShop code and had leftover money. That leftover money went towards Aqua Kitty UDX and I’ve been playing that as of late. It’s a fun game to pick up and play that involves a kitty in a submarine with shmup-like elements. Check out the Nintendo eShop page and exchange $2.69.

Play co-op or solo, the milk must flow!

AQUA KITTY UDX blasts onto Nintendo Switch in this enhanced Ultra Edition including an all-new epic Dreadnought mode! You and your team of milk mining kittens have overcome a fear of water to drill down under the ocean seabed and begin extracting vast reserves of what seems to be naturally forming full-fat milk.

Get ready for fast-paced submarine action, defending the kittens from disruptive mechanical sea creatures. The additional Dreadnought mode takes you deep down into the Meowiana trench. There you must fly through and destroy huge multi-screen enemy craft, whilst rescuing imprisoned kittens.

Steamworld Dig

theFlamey and I reviewed and loved Steamworld Dig and if you have yet to play it, now is the time as its down to $2.49 on the Nintendo eShop Page. You can read our reviews here, The Flamey Vita Review and Lord Shmup Nintendo Switch Review.

A Fistful of Dirt

SteamWorld Dig is a platform mining adventure with strong Metroidvanian influences. Take the role of Rusty, a lone mining steambot, as he arrives at an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below…

Danmaku Unlimited 3

The anchor to this list is from my friend Sunny Sy Tam and Doragon Games, Danmaku Unlimited 3. A lovely, vertical, bullet curtain shmup you can get hold of for $3.99 by visiting the Nintendo eShop page.

SHOOT. DODGE. EXPLODE. Can you survive the Bullet Storm?

Take to the skies once more as the last defender of humanity against overwhelming odds! Lovingly built to be enjoyed by newcomers and genre veterans alike, Danmaku Unlimited 3 is a perfect medley of the best aspects of classic Bullet Hell shooters wrapped up in a modern and approachable package.
