Underhero is a hot take on a classic heroic tale. What if a goomba killed Mario before he got to Bowser? What if Link died right before he reached Ganon? Paper Castle Games answers these questions with Underhero, a wacky 2D side scroller inspired by Paper Mario and overflowing with charm.
When the bad guy wins.
The game opens up at the end of a hero’s journey, right before the final boss fight begins. As the scene unravels, we find the hero outsmarted and ultimately killed by the enemy NPC. This NPC then takes the hero’s sword, the talking Elizabeth IV, and steps up to the plate to take on their boss, the menacing Mr. Stitches. Thus our underlying hero is born.
Working for the BOSS
As an “employee” of the final boss, you get to explore the world and chat with other NPC’s as a co-worker. Hang out in the cafeteria or walk around the employee apartments, there’s plenty of enemies to talk to. The dialogue is quirky and gives insight to the Chestnut Kingdom in which you reside. Once you’re out in the world these co-workers will put up a fight. The battle system takes an interesting twist. It’s turn-based, but you can react at any time to duck, jump, or block in order to avoid damage and take advantage of each unique enemy. You can even use a range of different weapons to attack. And if you really don’t want to deal with battling, you can just bribe your enemies and keep it moving.
The worlds outside the enemy, or employee, home base offer tons of bonus areas to explore and treasures to claim. As a 2D side-scroller, there’s plenty of platforming and puzzles involved. And when things seem to become too much of the same thing, you’ll get thrown new enemies and even different mini-games to dive into. It’s a fun world to explore with a lot to offer in it’s beautifully drawn pixel art style.
Underhero is a love letter to Paper Mario. It’s a fantastic 2D side-scrolling RPG that gets weirder with each conversation (in the best way). The battle system remains fun and engaging. The story is quirky with plenty of hilarious dialogue. The soundtrack is kickass. This is a game for those who want a challenging platformer with RPG elements. Be sure to pick up this title.
