When it comes to horror movies, the ingredients that make it a “Horror” really come down to the viewer and what gives them the willies. Is it drawn-out suspense and jump scares or do you prefer something with a Sci-Fi flavour of monsters from outer space? Perhaps you like the classics of Count Dracula and the Wolf Man or just a timeless classic of a killer in a mask hacking and slashing their way through a group of annoying teenagers? Whatever tickles your pickle for a spooky experience, TBG has put together a list of top movies to watch this Halloween Season, take a look and I’ll be right back…

Wes Craven’s Scream follows the story of Sidney Campbell as she and her friends are terrorised by a killer obsessed with horror movies. Featuring quotable moments and nods to just about every cliche and trope from classic slasher movies, Scream is a bloody yet entertaining ride from start to finish.

Welcome to Fright Night…..for real” When it comes to Vampires there are many forms to enjoy from the romanticised Count Dracula to the cock-rock Lost Boys but for a great experience look no further than Fright Night. Horror fanatic Charley Brewster discovers his new suave and seductive neighbour Jerry Dandridge is, in fact, a Vampire! Now he must convince his friends of the truth before Mr Dandridge sucks his way through the entire town.





Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired” John Carpenter’s The Thing sees a group of researchers in Antarctica make the discovery of a lifetime when they encounter an alien lifeform that kills and takes the form of any creature it comes into contact with. Be afraid, be VERY afraid” Many younger readers may not have heard of the adventures of Brundle Fly, but this tale of terror features a memorable and intense performance from Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle, the inventor of a teleport system. When testing the system on himself a fly gets into the machine merging their DNA together, what follows is a terrifying transformation from the friendly scientist into a hybrid creature whose instincts revert to only the most primal. With stunning special effects that will make your skin crawl and a powerful performance from co-star Geena Davis, The Fly will stay with you long after viewing.





No tears please, it’s a waste of good suffering” Clive Barker’s Hellraiser is an adaptation of his own novel The Hellbound Heart and introduced us to one of the most iconic horror villains, The Hell Priest, Pinhead. When young Kirsty Cotton moves into an old family house with her Father and Step-Mother the true nightmare begins when her disturbed uncle’s soul returns bringing with it the Cenobites who seek to drag him and Kirsty back into their hellacious world of pain and torturous pleasure.





One, Two, Freddy’s coming for you, Three, Four better lock your door…” Dream Warriors may be the third in the Elm Street series but is arguably the most entertaining as a group of troubled youngsters find themselves admitted to a psychiatric hospital for their fear of sleep brought on by the return of Freddy Krueger. Learning to harness the power of their dreams and join forces they seek to defeat the living nightmare once and for all.





Whatever it was, it was bigAlien belongs on any list of scary movies. Regarded as one of the most terrifying films of all time for good reason. The crew of the deep space mining vessel Nostromo respond to an SOS call from planet LV-426. After a crew member gets brought back on board with a parasite attached to him all hell breaks loose as the crew are stalked and picked off one by one from the monstrous Alien. Tension, atmosphere and terror seep into every minute of this Ridley Scott classic.

I put a spell on you and now you’re mine” Halloween can be fun for all ages and this Disney favourite is a real treat. As a group of Salem youngsters unwittingly resurrect The Sanderson Sisters, a trio of witches thought to have been defeated three hundred years ago. Reborn in the modern-day they seek to suck the souls from all the children in Salem before sunrise. Bette Midler steals the show as the elder witch in this comedy classic.





We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!” Sticking with fun for the whole family although the eighties were a bit more risque than modern kids films, the classic Ghostbusters is always a treat to watch. Dan Akyroyd and Bill Murray steal the show as a group of scientists turned paranormal exterminators get caught up in a fight to save the world from the evil god Gozer. With an iconic theme song, classic dialogue and a giant marshmallow man, this is popcorn entertainment at it’s best.

“We just killed our girlfriend with a chainsaw, does that sound fine?” Sam Raimi’s cult classic series is brought to life by a career performance from Bruce Campbell. In this stylish sequel Ash Williams and his girlfriend head to an isolated cabin for a romantic break when they stumble upon the workbooks of an archaeologist, reciting passages from the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis they summon an evil force intent on possessing the living. Featuring hilarious and blood-soaked scenarios including a memorable scene with a possessed hand, Evil Dead 2 is not to be missed.

Fire doesn’t cleanse, it blackens” Granted movie adaptations of games tend to be terrible but Silent Hill has to make the list for two reasons, first, the awesome presentation from music to creature design is top-notch and second, it’s one of the only films Sean Bean doesn’t die in, which is quite remarkable in its own right.





I spent eight years trying to reach him and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realised what was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply, evil” Well, it’s not Halloween without everybody’s favourite silent stalker. The 1978 original from John Carpenter follows the story of Laurie Strode as a night of babysitting turns into a fight for survival while being hunted down by the shape himself, Michael Myers. Featuring an iconic theme tune and great performances from Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance, you can’t have Halloween night without it!
