The Super Bowl has become as much about the surprises as it is about Football. Every year tens of thousands of people pack the stadiums to watch their favourite teams compete in the ultimate showdown, while millions of others watch from the comfort of their own sofas. And yes, while the result of a bunch of well-padded super athletes running into each other is exciting, just as many of us are watching only to see the trailer for the next batch of Hollywood blockbusters.
Among the highlights this year were some pretty hilarious adverts for both Pringles and Pepsi, while Olay went down the route of acknowledging the cinematic links between lotions and serial killers – so hats off to them. But let’s face it, outside of the movie teasers, the biggest commercial of the whole night had to be that of the resurrection of The Dude in Stella Artois’ ‘Big Lebowski/Sex and the City’ homage, which actually leaked a few days ago. We can only hope the hype is enough to coax the Coen Brothers into writing a sequel.
As for the actual movie teasers and trailers, there was actually 11 new movies and TV shows that dropped during the Super Bowl show. The biggest titles of the night were undoubtedly Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Toy Story 4, but there was also the first look at Jordan Peele in his new role as mouthpiece for the rebooted Twilight Zone TV series, which quite honestly gave us goosebumps, especially when the iconic music hit for the first time.
Nickelodeon was right at the forefront with the funny looking family flick Wonder Park, while dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale finally gets a 3rd season. Perhaps the freakiest trailer of all was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which is saying something when you look at how messed up Us looks.
All in all, although short, we were treated to some really cool looking entertainment for the next few months and the promise of even more teasers to come before the films and shows finally land later this year.
