Planet RIX-13 gets right to the point. The game starts out where you have just crash landed on an unknown, mysterious, pixelated planet and you need medical attention if you’re going to survive and return home. And within the first five seconds of playing and already dying due to radiation poisoning, I was quickly wondering what I had gotten myself into.

But fear not, the pace of this three or so hour long game is done well. There was never a time when I felt something was impossible to overcome. If something ever stumped me, I could always backtrack and more than likely come across the missing piece to a puzzle to proceed through this mystery/survival hybrid. And with the game only being a couple hours long, backtracking doesn’t get too repetitive while you’re going back and forth collecting little bits of information left behind from previous visitors on this mysterious planet.

The controls are pretty simple. You move your character left and right with the analogue stick through the 2D world. One button brings up your journal to check important story details, another button brings up your inventory, and another button is used to take action on highlighted items that you come across. There was never a trial and error grind. Any time I was interacting with a highlighted object, it would let me know exactly what it was needing. There was never a time I was randomly using inventory items on things to see if something would happen.

With the multiple controller options for the Switch, I didn’t feel any choice was a burden. My preference though, was using the detached joy con since my hands weren’t real busy and I didn’t have to use the right analogue. And it looks just as good in tabletop/handheld mode compared to it being on a tv. There is a nice polish to the game, especially for it being around 5$. I didn’t experience any frame rate or control input issues while playing. If there was something I had to complain about though, the ending could have been more climatic and there’s not really much replay value. But it’s really not a big issue with what you’re paying for.

Final Words:

Publisher, Sometimes You, has created a fun experience with Planet RIX-13. With the game only being a couple hours long though, it’s hard to not to go into much detail in the game without spoiling anything. But the pacing is done well. It has a nice mystery/survival mood. And for the price you really can’t go wrong.
