TBG Game of the Year 2018

Every website and publication has a countdown to their game of the year, and we at Two Beard Gaming are no different. 2018 has produced some rather outstanding games across all three of the current generation consoles, however asking someone what their favourite game of this past year was is a tough question. When I’m asked what’s your favourite film, song, TV show or book, my response changes depending upon my mood, sure I have favourites, yet to pin down one above all, really is quite difficult.

With this in mind, the team at Two Beard Gaming were asked to submit their top three games across each of the three formats, should they own them. The results are both predictable and interesting, the winner is simply the game which garnered the most mentions. In the case of multi-format games, votes were consolidated. The following games received one vote from our team:

⋅ Shadow of the Tomb Raider
⋅ Life is Strange 2
 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
⋅ Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden
 Fire Pro Wrestling
 Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy
 Spyro Reignited Trilogy

I feel it’s prudent to mention at this point that the following games again received one vote, however they are almost all Nintendo Switch exclusives. Now whilst Two Beard Gaming is a collection of a multinational team, with ages spanning from 16 to 40, it just goes to show the sheer appeal and breadth of the Nintendo Switch catalogue.

⋅ 20XX
⋅ Dead Cells
⋅ Sky Force Anniversary
⋅ Forgotten Anne
⋅ Overcooked 2
⋅ Dragon Ball FighterZ
⋅ Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
⋅ Aaero
⋅ Hover
⋅ Valkyria Chronicles 4
⋅ Hyper Light Drifter
⋅ Streets Of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe
⋅ Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

Games scoring 2 votes throws up some surprises, highly rated games such as Assassins Creed Odyssey, Octopath Traveller and Celeste. Older titles Diablo III: Eternal Collection and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and the massively underappreciated StarLink: Battle for Atlas.

Early year releases, Sea of Thieves and Monster Hunter World both score 3 votes from the team.

Failing to get onto the podium, Forza Horizon 4, Spider-Man, Far Cry 5 and God of War each pick up 4 votes. It’s at this point you should now be beginning to paint a picture of the types of gamers we have here at Two Beard Gaming, because on pretty much every other, Game of the Year list God of War has sat upon the top perch, and whilst it is clearly a revered game, it fails to be our runner-up.

That distinction goes to:

⋅ Red Dead Redemption 2 & Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

So the game of the year of which the Two Beard Gaming team collectively voted for more than any other title was…

Certainly not the highest-rated game of the year, yet one which carries oodles of charm, a touch of nostalgia, excellent graphics, addictive gameplay and of course, it is on the Switch, Two Beards Gaming’s clear console of choice.

Finally, I’d like to apologise that someone thought that one of the best games of 2018 was a 22-year-old game, which was average back then, and now, well it’s the same but looks better. Lord Shmup, shame on you, Crash Bandicoot, really?
